The Making ofDeleted ScenesFilm Trivia

As George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark adventure epic climbed toward grosses of $242 million, it became clear that Ford's Indiana Jones was a screen icon for the ages. For the second installment, the character name would be elevated to title billing as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Paramount Pictures crowed that the character's imprint on the public consciousness was unique. The prequel had achieved 80 percent public awareness before a single marketing dollar was spend, and that without the Internet! Raiders actually did the advertising job for Temple of Doom and the filmmakers couldn't resist poking some fun at all the studio's breast-beating. Notice that when night club singer Willie Scott makes her entrance during the opener at Shanghai's Club Obi Wan, she's blocking the title. With 80 percent instant recognition, who needs titles?

The first production meetings for Temple of Doom were held in the summer of 1982. The principal photography began in April 1983 under the working title Indiana Jones and the Temple of Death, a name which was eventually softened. The film's five-month, across-the-globe shoot took cast and crew from Lucas' production facility in Northern California to Sri Lanka, Macao, and England's Elstree Studios.
Temple of Doom eventually opened on May 23, 1984, and quickly bested Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi's $8.4 million single-day box office record.

It's mood was tougher, more intense than the first film, yet Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was every bit the cinematic entertainment that Raiders was.
